This research has been published in Annals of Oncology Journal. Studies show that cancer patients who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and who remain infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus have a 65% hospitalization rate.

The study was conducted by the Covid-19 coronavirus and the Cancer Consortium (CCC19), a group of 129 research centers that have been tracking the impact of the Covid-19 coronavirus on cancer patients since the start of the pandemic.

“Because immunity measures are not routinely pooled in clinical care, we don’t know whether these were patients who developed an effective immune response after vaccination or not,” says Jeremy Warner, MD, director of the CCC19 Research Coordination Center.
The consortium identified 1,787 patients with cancer and coronavirus for the study, most of whom had not been vaccinated.
The total number of patients who were fully vaccinated was 54, of which 46 percent of those who were fully vaccinated had reduced levels of lymphocytes, which are T cells and B cells that are responsible for the immunological response to viruses.
Generally, lymphopenia occurs in patients with cancer who receive anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies or CAR-T cell treatment for haematological malignancies, including lymphoma and leukemia.
This study seems to support previous observations that patients with haematological malignancies are at greater risk for severe infection with the coronavirus.
However, the number of patients in this study was too small to make definitive conclusions about the specific types of anticancer therapy that may be associated with breakthrough infection.
Patients on a regimen of corticosteroid treatment also appear to be more susceptible to hospitalization.
