Kalina Chapkanova may turn out to be the winning player if GERB and DPS form a government, and Geshev and Sarafov lose their posts
“The game continues. We’re regrouping.” This is what Borislav Sarafov says to Ivan Geshev, according to a leaked recording of a conversation between the two, probably the day before they took out their tomahawks against each other. The director of the National Investigative Service and deputy chief prosecutor may have been the person envisaged by GERB and DPS to take the position of chief.
However, Ivan Geshev decided that the game should continue, but in a different way and without the planned regrouping. And a mud war has started, from which both he and Sarafov will probably come out very dirty.
From this, a third player may turn out to be a winner – Burgas prosecutor Kalina Chapkanova. Looks like it’s her the blade in the High Judicial Council, which is tasked with leading the battle for the early release of accuser #1.
At the meeting of the Procurator’s College on Wednesday, Chapkanova suggested that the examination of Sarafov’s report against Geshev be included in the agenda as an emergency. In response, the Attorney General turned his anger on her.
She is also one of the six members of the Prosecutor’s College, which initiated the procedure for the removal of Geshev.
In 2017, Kalina Chapkanova was proposed as a member of the SJC by deputies from GERB. If Borisov’s party now manage to form a government with the DPS, and Geshev and Sarafov are removed after the compromising war, it will not be a surprise if the former head of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Burgas becomes the next chief prosecutor.
However, she was also a supervising prosecutor in the Sarafovo attack case in 2012, which is a point in its favor in an international context as well.
