A Terrifying Encounter: Cougar Attacks Mountain Bikers in Washington
In a shocking incident that unfolded on a trail in Washington, a group of five mountain bikers found themselves under attack by a cougar. The ferocious predator stalked the cyclists before launching a vicious assault, resulting in one cyclist sustaining injuries. The attack took place on Saturday around 12:30 p.m. ET near Tokul Creek, approximately 5 miles north of Snoqualmie. The mountain bikers had been enjoying their ride through the wilderness when they suddenly became aware of the presence of the cougar. Reports indicate that the cyclists used their bikes to pin down the cougar, allowing them to call for emergency assistance.
The King County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the incident and promptly dispatched a wildlife officer to the scene. Fortunately, the officer arrived in time to eliminate the immediate threat by killing the attacking cougar. However, a second cougar managed to escape into the forest before it could be apprehended.
Tragically, one female cyclist, identified as a 60-year-old, suffered injuries during the encounter. While the extent of her injuries was not disclosed, authorities have stated that they were non-life-threatening. She was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Washington State Fish and Wildlife police spokesperson Becky Elder emphasized the rarity of such incidents. “Cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare,” she said. In fact, over the past century, there have been only two fatal cougar attacks in Washington state, with approximately 20 other recorded encounters resulting in human injuries.
To ensure the safety of the public, officials made the difficult decision to lethally remove the attacking cougar. Wildlife personnel were able to retrieve one subadult cougar from the scene, but efforts to locate the second cougar proved fruitless thus far. A “hound handler” has been called in to aid in tracking down the elusive predator.
