Rednex hit big with the song “Cotton eye Joe” almost 30 years ago. And despite the passage of time, the song is played diligently – so diligently that it has now broken a new record.
The song is used in the viral clip “Gedagedigedagedago”, a YouTube video that has been viewed over three billion times on YouTube in the last 26 days. The figure represents a world record for the Swedish Eurodance band.
Just in the first eight days after the clip was uploaded to the platform, it had been viewed a billion times, writes TV4 News who was the first to report the record.
Rednex: “Pinches in the arm”
Rednex’s Pat Reiniz says in a press release that the band is currently the most played in the world on Youtube. Four percent of the world’s population must have seen the “Cotton eye Joe” clip.
“We have contacted Guinness World Records,” he says.
The progress of Eurodance music in recent times shocks the band.
“The whole team just sits and gapes, pinches their arms and is beyond comprehension. The numbers are of such a magnitude that hardly anyone believes us. We would love for someone to do it so we can start celebrating,” says Pat Reiniz in the press release.
TV4 Nyheterna writes that the viral trend “Gedagedigedagedago” took off after the Danish artist Razi Irawani wrote a text with made-up words and set it to music with “Cotton eye Joe”.
The clip went viral on Tiktok and has since become a trend among creators.
