Three victims per 1,000 inhabitants

According to figures from the statistics service of the Ministry of the Interior, it is Doubs which is distinguished by a number of victims of domestic violence higher than the other departments.

It is followed by the Côte-d’Or, the Côtes-d’Armor and the Seine-Saint-Denis : there are more than three victims recorded by the security forces per 1,000 inhabitants. The Corsica and the Creuse record the lowest rates.

At the national level, the police and gendarmerie services recorded, in 2019, a 16% increase in domestic violence compared to 2018. This represents 142,310 people, all sexes combined. Among this violence, 3% concern complaints for rape or sexual assault, 98% of which are filed by women (4,320 out of 4,400).

“A possible effect of the Grenelle”

Still at the national level, around 88% of victims of domestic violence are women, or 125,840, a stable proportion compared to 2018. In 2019, 146 women were killed by their spouse or ex-partner, 25 more than the previous year, according to the latest official figures released in August.

The increase in domestic violence reflects, according to the Ministry of the Interior, a possible positive effect of the Grenelle on domestic violence launched in September 2019, which may have encouraged victims to file more complaints and promote better reception by the security services ”.

A telephone number (anonymous and free) is available for people who are victims or witnesses of domestic violence: 3919. It is also possible to send an SMS to 114, or to call the police on 17.
