Nigeria challenged Ivory Coast in the CAN final this Sunday evening and the Elephants were crowned in front of their home crowd!
The 34th final of the African Cup of Nations took place this Sunday evening. Nigeria challenged Ivory Coast, the organizing country of this 2024 edition. An entire continent therefore held its breath, especially after the romantic journey of the Ivorians, miraculously drafted at the end of the group phase.
After a particularly flamboyant closing ceremony, it was in the 38th minute that Nigeria opened the scoring, although clearly dominated during most of the first period. Kossonou intervened in front of Sanusi to block his cross and on the corner which followed, Seri jumped at the near post and in spite of himself extended the leather’s run with his head. Troost-Ekong took the opportunity to score, with a header, 1-0. Côte d’Ivoire had good chances (7th, 14th, 21st, 34th, 45th) during the first act, but Nwabali was vigilant between the posts.
In the second half, the Elephants insisted and ended up equalizing through Franck Kessié, the midfielder taking advantage of a corner on the hour mark to put the two teams back on level terms. The Ivorians even went ahead thanks to Haller ten minutes from time. Adingra, untenable, played against Aina before signing a cross on which the local striker scored the 2-1 goal. This was the final score and the Ivorians won the trophy at home after a journey full of emotions!
