A recent post on TikTok has reignited a heated debate over Costco’s generous returns policy and the ethics of some consumers’ behavior.
An influencer published a video on Friday, which has since gone viral with more than a million views, in which she asks herself questions.
She wonders in particular if she is crazy to find deplorable the attitude of a customer who would have returned a two and a half year old sofa simply because she no longer liked the color.
The video thus calls into question the ethical principles of certain customers who do not hesitate to return their goods to obtain a refund for an item which is neither defective nor damaged, but simply out of fashion.
In her own video, the customer in question explains that she was terribly nervous about returning her old sofa, and that she simply explained to the employees that she no longer liked the color.
“And they took it back because Costco has this crazy return policy, but am I the only person who thinks that’s just a mistake?” the TikTok influencer asked.
“You bought something, you used it and loved it with your kids, your pets, your whole house and your whole family, and you used it for two and a half years, and just because there’s a small flaw in this store’s policy, do you think it is morally right to give this sofa back? And to obtain a full refund for a used item that presented no problem?”, she detailed.
The TikToker concluded that the decision to do so was “morally wrong,” but netizens had differing opinions on the situation.
“You are not wrong. People are abusing Costco’s return policy.”
“I think it’s wrong that they make me pay an annual fee to spend my own money in their store. So I don’t find it reprehensible.”
“I think it is in poor taste to return it after 2.5 years.”
In addition to raising relevant questions regarding consumer ethics and corporate responsibility, the debate opened by the influencer helps to shed light on the fraudulent practices of certain consumers, who do not hesitate to exploit generous return policies.
