The government paid $ 36 million to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the BioNTech company for 3 million doses, as reported the previous January.
The president of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), Dante Mossi, said on Friday that the Government of Costa Rica will seek a new loan, which will be used to purchase vaccines against COVID-19.
Mossi assured that during the next week the bank authorities will meet to discuss the viability of extending credit to our country.
«We are going to discuss, in this board session on Tuesday, the loan for $ 80 million to Costa Rica. I would hope it is approved, because it is an emergency, it is humanitarian, but the funds will be available when Costa Rica completes the necessary legalization and approval in the Legislative Assembly, “he said during a conversation with the Central American press.
In previous January, the Government reported that it paid $ 36 million to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the BioNTech company for 3,000,075 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, which means that the average amount per person amounts to $ 23.99 (approximately ¢ 14,697 for two doses).
The head of CABEI took advantage of the space to recall the importance of approving the loan for $ 550 million for the electric train, which has not advanced in the Legislative Branch.
“You have to ask yourself what it means to delay access to a clean and efficient means of transport. When we are concerned about the price of oil, we will look for these types of projects and the Costa Rican railroad has been a school, because they are subjects that take a long time. I am restless, for this approval to be given as soon as possible, we will wait as long as necessary for it to be debated, but decisions must be made, “he said.
Mossi recalled that the Bank has already approved two more loans that have not been ratified: one for $ 300 million for the guarantee fund and another for $ 31 million for the conservation and security of the National Theater.
“We hope that it does not pass like the Cathedral of Paris that until it caught fire, people thought about doing something. There are decisions to be made, otherwise the consequences are too high to return. These loans are designed to assist the very special needs of Costa Rica; I would ask the Legislative Assembly to process this type of financing as quickly as possible, “he asked.
