San José, Jan 23 (EP/PL).- Some 507,400 doses of the bivalent anti-Covid-19 vaccine will enter Costa Rica in the first and second quarters of this year, the Ministry of Health said today.
The portfolio specified that this amount of biologicals was scheduled to arrive in the country in the third and fourth quarters of 2023, but in its third ordinary session this year, the National Commission for Vaccination and Epidemiology (CNVE) agreed to approve the change in frequency of delivery of adult bivalent vaccines.
The CNVE’s decision responds to the objective of having greater availability for those who want to apply the reinforcement against Covid-19, a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, said the Ministry of Health.
In the second epidemiological week (from the 8th to the 14th of this month) of 2023, Costa Rica registered a decrease in new cases of Covid-19, but an increase in hospitalizations for this disease.
Data from the Health Surveillance Directorate, of the aforementioned portfolio, reflect 160 daily average hospitalizations for Covid-19 between January 8 and 14, 2023, of which 142 correspond to the ward and 18 to Intensive Care Units.
This number represents an increase in relation to the first epidemiological week of this year, when they showed a daily average of 139 hospitalizations, 122 of them in the ward and 17 in Intensive Care Units, indicates the weekly report.
On the other hand, statistics from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund indicate that until last day 18, only 1,026,380 people had received the fourth dose of the drug against this disease, 9.3 percent of the total population to receive this reinforcement.
