Costa Rican sports leaders and specialists are finalizing preparations today for the celebration of the most prestigious off-road triathlon event in the world this weekend, according to its sponsoring entity, the National Cooperative of Educators (Coopenae).

The event, in that discipline (swimming, mountain biking and trail running), under the name XTERRA Costa Rica, will be held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 in the northwestern town of Las Catalinas, in the province of Guanacaste.

The sporting event, which will host 747 participants, including several world champions, “promises to be a milestone in the national sporting calendar,” said Coopenae’s manager of institutional relations and sustainability, Nazira Burgos, as quoted by the newspaper La República.

“We are proud to support this event, which not only stands out for its quality, but is also a valuable platform for national athletes,” he added.

For their part, organizers such as former Olympic triathlete Leonardo Chacón, along with Carlos Díaz and Luis Diego Chaverri, expressed their satisfaction at completing the registration quota in the three disciplines: triathlon, trail running and open water.

Participants include international elite triathletes, such as Spaniard Javier Gómez, 2012 XTERRA World Champion and Olympic medalist in London 2012.

Other distinguished figures in this modality are the American Josiah Middaugh, World Champion in 2015, and his son Porter Middaugh, along with others such as the Austrian Dominik Wychera and the Portuguese Tiago Maia.

XTERRA racing, the world’s most recognized off-road triathlon franchise, began in Maui, Hawaii and has grown to include competitions in 47 countries.
