Costa Rica declares state of emergency as illegal immigration surges

On the afternoon of September 26, local time, Costa Rica President Rodrigo Chavez announced that due to the recent surge in the number of illegal immigrants passing through the country, far exceeding the average level in previous years, Costa Rica will enter a state of emergency with immediate effect. Chavez also warned that the government would deport immigrants who “behave badly.”

According to official data from Costa Rica, in less than a month since September this year, 60,000 illegal immigrants have entered Panama and crossed the region trying to enter North America. The number of illegal immigrants entering and transiting through the Darien Pass this year has exceeded 390,000, one fifth of whom are children. Some immigrants are stranded in Costa Rica because they are unable to pay transportation fees, posing potential security risks. Last week, the Colombian government detained 27 illegal immigrants in the border city of Paso Canoas. These immigrants were suspected of causing riots and resisting the police.

The Darien Pass consists of a large swamp and forest. It is an unopened section of the Pan-American Highway on the border between Colombia and Panama. It is 160 kilometers long and 50 kilometers wide. Approximately 248,000 people traveled through the region throughout 2022, compared with approximately 133,000 in 2021.
