Cost of Egg, Bacon and Cheese Sandwich Rises in New York – NBC New York

NEW YORK – One of New York’s breakfast favorites becomes the latest victim of inflation, so get ready to pay almost double for a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

The classic breakfast sandwich is very popular in Big Apple bodegas, as it’s easy to make, easy to eat on the way to work, and inexpensive, though not as cheap as it used to be.

To keep up with current levels of inflation due to the pandemic and Russia’s war with Ukraine, bodega owners have no choice but to raise the prices of their famously low-priced breakfast sandwiches.

“Bacon, egg and cheese, you can’t get rid of that sandwich,” said Francisco Marte, a bodega owner in the Bronx. to our sister network NBC 4 New York. “That’s New Yorkers favorite sandwich.”

Mars has had to raise prices on everything from sugar to chips, and the cost of its bacon, egg and cheese sandwich has risen from $2.50 to $4.50.

At the wholesale level, inflation rose 11.3% in June compared to a year earlier, the US Department of Labor reported. Producer prices have risen nearly 18% for goods and nearly 8% for services compared to June 2021.

“These things happen. And usually, in normal times, the supply chain can absorb some of that shock,” said Katie Denis, a spokeswoman for the Consumer Brands Association, a trade group that represents food, personal care and cleaning companies. “Right now, there’s just no chance.”

Frances Rice, who stopped at the Mars warehouse to buy bacon, eggs, and cheese, told NBC You’re trying to figure out how to minimize the impact on your budget as prices rise. She says there is always a silver lining.

“It means I eat a good breakfast and carry it through to lunch and don’t eat again until I get home, which means I lose weight,” she said. “I have to see the positive side of things, because you know what? Either way, if you have to move, you have to pay. If you’re hungry, you have to eat.”
