During the recording, widely broadcast on social networks, Cosculluela expresses: “In Puerto Rico … that is, the blacks are not black. The blacks are those from there, from Africa, those from here did not come from Africa. Do not strike this crap here. Given the wave of criticism that his words have provoked, José Fernando Cosculluela Suárez, the artist’s first name, stated in writing in a statement to El Nuevo Día the following:
“I am writing to you here to present a public apology to all those who in one way or another were offended by my expressions last night. It was not my best night in many ways and I want to clarify that what I wanted to say regarding the events that have taken place after the death of George Floyd I expressed them incorrectly. The fact that we are going through since the earthquakes, pandemic of COVID-19, the curfew and protests following what happened with George Floyd opened a gap of protests and massive riots to achieve justice for an innocent person and like many people I am in favor of the policemen involved paying for the abuse they committed. What I wanted to express with what is happening in Puerto Rico was that, yes, I agree with the world uprising so that justice can be done against abuse and racism. However, I admit that I do not agree, like thousands of people, that a group of people deviate from the real protest to carry out vandalism to businesses. Above all, because there is a people in need that wants to work and is waiting for jobs to open so they can bring bread to the table. I may have defects, but I am Puerto Rican and I love my country. I would never raise my voice against my people. God bless you”.
