Corruption in the Russian Army: Schemes, Bribes, and Scandals

Corruption is very common in Russia. This also applies to the army. In the Russian army units involved in Russia’s war against Ukraine, there are extensive schemes that allow soldiers to buy leave, rotation, “injury” and even the option of not going on strike, which in effect means the chance to stay alive.

The independent publication “Novaya gazeta Evropa” tells about corruption in the Russian army. A woman gave the media an insight into corruption schemes. Her son, who was recruited in prison for the war against Ukraine, serves in the “Storm Z” unit of the Russian army. This information is also confirmed by another source – a Russian army officer from a motorized rifle unit.

The mother of the former prisoner says that her son went to fight against Ukraine in April of this year. The son sent several messages to the mother. In one such message, the son says that his unit stands still and does not participate in battles, thanks to “multi-million [rubļu] bribes”.
