| Corruption: Former minister incarcerated in China

Beijing: the former minister of state who headed the public security department in China was sentenced to life in prison in a corruption case.

Former minister Sun Lijun, 53, was convicted of embezzlement of $ 91 million, undermining the unity of the ruling Communist Party and abdicating during the fight against Covid-19. In 2017, Lijun oversaw the crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Lijun was also part of the team sent to Wuhan in 2020 to oversee measures to control the spread of Covid-19.

The provincial sentencing court said Lijun made money by abusing his position between 2001 and 2020.

A number of former officials have been involved in President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign ahead of the Chinese Communist Party Congress.
