Brussels. Former Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa called on Tuesday for a “strong response” from the international community to the invasion of the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest his former vice president, Jorge Glas.
“If there is no strong response from the international community, this will not stop,” said the former president at a press conference in the European Parliament together with Spanish euro-legislator Manu Pineda.
Among those responses he mentioned the possible withdrawal of ambassadors from EU countries and “statements [oficiales] much stronger”, in addition to supporting judicial actions such as the one Mexico presented before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“I ask the world to exert the political and judicial pressure that is necessary,” he declared.
“I hope this does not become ideological, because this goes beyond left or right. This goes against civilizing principles, such as the inviolability of diplomatic headquarters,” he added.
After being forcibly removed from the Mexican embassy, where he benefited from asylum status, Glas was taken to a prison and was urgently hospitalized on Monday, thus aggravating the crisis.
For his part, Pineda pointed out that he will promote in the European Parliament the activation of the dispute settlement mechanism contained in the association agreement signed between the EU and Ecuador.
In addition, he will request the sending of a mission of MEPs to Ecuador to verify Glas’ health status.
