Locals believe the bodies were dumped in the Hindu sacred river by relatives of the victims.
Authorities in northern India said they had set up a net in the Ganges River after dozens of corpses were found along its banks, believed to be victims of COVID-19, AFP reported.
Northeastern Water Minister Bihar Sanjay Kumar announced on Twitter that the network was set up at the border with Uttar Pradesh.
The discovery of 71 bodies in the state of Bihar revived fears of the virus circulating in rural India, where two-thirds of its population lives. According to autopsies, they died 4-5 days ago.
Local media claim that 25 bodies were also found in Gahmar district of Uttar Pradesh.
