Coronia crisis cuts in on the labor market: a quarter fewer vacancies

Before the virus outbreak, there were an average of 173,830 vacancies per week, but in the first three weeks after the outbreak, that number dropped by 18 percent to 142,160 per week. In the following three weeks, the number dropped by another 10 percent to 128,550 vacancies.

On average, the number of vacancies decreased by 45,000 compared to before the corona crisis. That is a decrease of 26 percent, the UWV calculated.

The number of vacancies continues to fall, but less sharply than just after the outbreak of the corona crisis.

Biggest drop in the hospitality industry

Vacancies for service professions such as chefs, service staff and cleaners are decreasing the most. This is due to the closure of the catering and cultural institutions and the cancellation of events.

Vacancies for commercial professions such as sales staff also fell and there are far fewer vacancies for administrative professions such as receptionists and secretaries.

Least vacancies in Amsterdam

The number of vacancies fell most sharply in and around Amsterdam. In the past three months, Amsterdam had an average of 18,130 unfilled vacancies per week. In April, this number fell further to 11,700 vacancies.

In April, vacancies fell most sharply in Zeeland. There the drop was 18 percent.

Increase in ICT, education and construction

Since the beginning of April, there have been more vacancies for the ICT sector, education and construction. ICT professionals can take advantage of the increased demand for online services.

Schools are looking for new staff for the new school year. This concerns vacancies for subjects in secondary and secondary vocational education.

Construction also saw a slight increase in work for carpenters, performers and painters.
