The number of people infected with coronavirus is increasing, in particular in 3 Flemish provinces. Some are already talking about a “second wave” and are opening the door to a lockdown. However, the figures are not comparable to the situation in mid-March.

IThere is a scent of “panic on board”, especially in the north of the country. Just to start the day off right, Marc Van Ranst, the inescapable Flemish virologist member of the deconfinement group (GEES), sealed the mood on Friday at 8 a.m. in a tweet. “On Monday July 13, there were 216 new cases (from Covid-19 in Belgium, note). As a reminder, on March 15, we had 214 new cases. And the lockdown started on the 17th. ” Reading these few characters, one would think that we only have a few days left before a new confinement. As if the scenario of mid-March was going to repeat itself.
And Van Ranst doesn’t stop there. All day long, he multiplies the warning messages. “Faced with these figures, it must be said that we are at the start of a second wave,” he launched at the microphone of the VRT. By transforming the slogan at the start of the crisis “Blijf in uw kot” (Stay at home) into “Ga terug in uw kot” (Go home).
