Coronavirus: WHO recommends video games to fight the pandemic

To help keep them busy, dozens of video game developers and publishers have decided to offer one or more of the games in their catalog for free. This is the case in particular of some big names in the industry, such as Ubisoft (“Rabbids: Learn to code!”), Crystal Dynamics (“Tomb Raider”), or Activision Blizzard (“Call of Duty : Warzone “). And it would be a shame not to take advantage of it, especially as playing would be beneficial for the health of all, it is even the World Health Organization (WHO) which says it.

The initiative, praised by WHO, aims to encourage “gamers”, and in particular young people, to respect the confinement instructions. “Video game companies have a global audience – and we encourage everyone to #PlayApartTogether (“Play separately together”, in French). No more physical distance [et] other steps will help smooth the curve [et] to save lives, “Ray Chambers, one of his senior officials, commented on social media Twitter on March 28.

Beyond the fun aspect, video games, whether on home console or on the phone, can also allow isolated people to stay in touch with their friends (or family). Remember that since 2018 WHO has recognized addiction disorders in video games as a disease in its own right. This did not prevent Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Secretary-General of WHO, from welcoming the approach initiated in partnership with video game publishers. So have fun in containment mode.
