Coronavirus: Viennese hospitals require a mask

So far, there has been no confirmed coronavirus case in Austria. Although all tests have so far been negative, the hospital association (KAV) is now playing it safe. Masks are now mandatory in Viennese hospitals. All people suffering from fever, cough or hoarseness are affected. Attention is drawn to this with large posters in five languages.

The KAV speaks of a pure “precautionary measure”. Wearing a mouthguard is advisable until the appropriate clarification and is also recommended for normal influenza.

So far 97 tests in Austria, all negative

In Austria, 97 tests were carried out by Tuesday morning after suspected cases of coronavirus infection (2019-nCoV). All were negative, so far there are no confirmed cases of illness in the country, the Ministry of Health reported (as of February 11, 2020, 10:00 a.m.). The number of tests performed has increased by exactly one examination since Monday afternoon.

If a health authority reports a suspected case, it is immediately tested for the presence of a coronavirus infection. Over the course of a day, new suspected cases and new test results can cause the number of suspected cases to fluctuate several times. “For this reason, and to avoid misunderstandings, the number of tests carried out to date and the number of laboratory-confirmed infections to date through 2019-nCoV will be communicated on the website with immediate effect”, as soon as the ministry is satisfied with the results, the procedure that has been new since Tuesday was repeated explained. The reporting of individual suspected cases will be omitted in the future.

A team of experts from AGES (Agency for Health and Food Security) answers questions about the coronavirus (phone: 0800 / 555-621, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober (Greens) emphasized that there is absolutely no cause for excitement at the moment, but that great attention and international coordination are needed, which is well ensured in all areas by the Austrian health authorities.

The death toll rose to more than 1,100

Coronavirus deaths in China have increased to more than 1,100. As the regional government of the central Chinese province of Hubei announced on Wednesday, another 94 people died there as a result of the infection. The official total number of deaths in mainland China increased to at least 1,110.

A further 1,638 cases of infection were reported in Hubei. The official total number of cases in mainland China due to the virus, now officially known as “Covid-19”, has grown to more than 44,200. The vast majority of deaths and infections continue to occur in Hubei, from where the epidemic started in December. The province has largely isolated the authorities from the outside world.

Outside of China, there are more than 400 other infections in around 25 countries. In Bavaria, two further infections with Covid-19 have now been detected, as the local health ministry announced on Tuesday evening. The number of cases of infection confirmed in Germany rose to 16.

Another 39 coronavirus infections were confirmed among people on a quarantined cruise ship in Japan. According to the Japanese Minister of Health, Katsunobu Kato, the number of infections among the people who traveled to Japan on board the “Diamond Princess” rose to at least 174.

The ship, with around 3,700 people on board, was quarantined early last week after it arrived in Yokohama. A passenger who had left the “Diamond Princess” in Hong Kong had previously tested positive for the corona virus there.
