Coronavirus Vaccinations. Study: AstraZeneki vaccine is 89 percent effective, Pfizer / BioNTech is 90 percent effective

Full inoculation with two-dose COVID-19 preparations has an “amazing effect”, reported British Deputy Health Minister Hadhim Zahawi. These are the conclusions of a study conducted by the government agency Public Health England. The latest reports on the scale of vaccination in Poland were provided by the government plenipotentiary, Michał Dworczyk. “This is another step in the fight to return to normalcy,” he assessed.

Vaccinations against COVID-19 in England by 9 May prevented the deaths of 13,000 people over the age of 60, according to estimates by the government’s Public Health England (PHE) agency in its weekly report monitoring the vaccination campaign. Thanks to vaccines, about 39.1 thousand people over 65 years old did not have to be treated for COVID-19 in hospitals, PHE continues.

According to analyzes, administering two doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is 89 percent effective in preventing the symptomatic course of the disease, and a two-dose formulation from Pfizer and BioNTech is 90 percent effective.

– The new data underscores the amazing effect of vaccination with two doses, the second dose of AstraZeneki gives up to 90 percent of immunity – said the vaccination deputy minister of health Hadhim Zahawi.

This is the first PHE study to consider the use of two doses of this vaccine.

Over 50% protection against the symptomatic course of the disease after the first dose

The effectiveness of protection against the symptomatic form of COVID-19 after the first dose was assessed at 53 percent for unvaccinated people for AstraZeneki and 54 percent for Pfizer / BioNTech.

According to PHE, 10 weeks after the first injection of Pfizer / BioNTech, “a slight decrease in vaccine effectiveness” was noted. This phenomenon has not been found with AstraZeneki. In the UK, the interval between two doses of vaccines has been extended to 12 weeks, but recently it was reduced to eight weeks for people over 50, the Reuters Agency said.
