Coronavirus. Two teachers’ unions demand surgical masks

Two teachers’ unions, the Snuipp-FSU and the Sgen-CFDT, have called on the Ministry of Education to provide surgical masks, and not in fabric, for “Effectively protect students and staff” in the midst of an epidemic rebound, reports theAFP this Thursday, September 10.

“The ministry provides gold fabric masks according to the admission of the health authorities, this mask is only effective when worn by all people in contact”, wrote the Snuipp-FSU, the first teachers’ union in a statement.

The surgical mask demanded in nursery and primary schools

“In primary school, the mask is worn only by staff, which does not protect staff and students from the spread of the virus”, continues the union.

The Ministry of Education provided washable masks to teaching staff at the start of the year, in varying proportions depending on the academies.

In a letter sent Thursday to the Ministry of Education, the Sgen-CFDT also claims that “The staff working in nursery and elementary classes, in EPS, in which the pupils do not wear the mask, are equipped with surgical masks, or even type II surgical masks”.

“We note that personnel who should be equipped with type II surgical masks are still not”, also writes the union.

Wearing masks for elementary school students in question

At the start of the year, the ministry assured that teachers who are vulnerable or in contact with people at risk could apply for FFP2 masks.

The Sgen-CFDT also requests that the ministry seize the High Council of Public Health concerning the wearing of the mask for the pupils of the elementary schools, stressing that since mid-August, the WHO no longer considers that the wearing of the mask is against. productive in children under 12 years of age.

According to the World Health Organization, wearing a mask can be considered between 6 and 11 years of age, provided that a series of factors are taken into account (the level of transmission of the virus in the area where the child resides, his ability to to use a mask correctly, etc.).

“We ask that the mask allocations for the agents be more important. The number of masks provided to each agent must at least cover a full week of work and trips between home and the workplace ”, still writes the Sgen-CFDT.
