Coronavirus: Trump bans travel to the US for Europeans

What does this ban consist of?

  • US President Donald Trump delivered a televised address on March 11, 2020 at 9 p.m. Washington time to announce the various measures taken to combat the coronavirus. Main measure announced: Donald Trump has suspended all travel from Europe to the United States.
  • Concretely, travelers from Europe are prohibited from traveling to the United States from March 13, 2020 at midnight New York time. The ban was pronounced for 30 days, so until April 12, 2020 inclusive.
  • On March 14, 2020, US Vice President Mike Pence announced that the ban is extended to the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The ban will take effect from Monday, March 16, 2020 at midnight New York time.

Who is affected by this suspension?

  • The entry ban on American territory concerns all persons who have stayed in the Schengen area or in the United Kingdom during the 14 days preceding their departure for the United States. The Schengen Area brings together the 22 countries of the European Union, including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Portugal and also Switzerland.
  • If you are French, Belgian, Swiss or British, you are therefore prohibited from visiting the United States by April 12, 2020.
  • Donald Trump marks only two exceptions: American citizens and permanent residents in the United States.

  • AIR FRANCE – From March 14 to 28, 2020, Air France announces that it will maintain flights to Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York JFK, San Francisco and Washington. “At this stage, Air France is awaiting clarification from the US authorities on the possibility of maintaining service to Miami, Boston and Houston,” says the company. “Air France is working with its partners KLM, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic to put in place a plan for continuity of service to the United States for its customers beyond March 28, 2020”, adds the company.
