Coronavirus treatment: Thailand uses HIV medication mix

While Italian researchers succeed in isolating the coronavirus in the laboratory, Thailand reports an astonishing success: an infected woman from China was cured using a mixture of different medications.

To speak of a breakthrough would be premature. However, Thai authorities have now announced that they have successfully treated a woman infected with the coronavirus. According to their own statements, they used a cocktail of flu and HIV medication against the new virus. The state of the infected woman from China has improved dramatically after taking the drug cocktail, the Ministry of Health in Bangkok reported. The virus was no longer detectable in the patient within 48 hours after the start of treatment.

The doctors gave the woman a combination of the flu drug oseltamivir and the antiviral agents used to treat HIV, lopinavir and ritonavir. The ministry said the drug cocktail should now be tested further in the laboratory.

To date, 19 infections with the novel corona virus have been detected in Thailand, which is the second highest number of cases outside of China after Japan. Eight of the patients are now cured and eleven are still being treated in hospitals.

Corona virus isolated

Italian researchers also report success. You have isolated the corona virus. “This is important news internationally. It means that there are more ways to understand and study it to contain it,” said Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza. The results of the scientists from the National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome would be made available to the international community for further research.
