Coronavirus, thousands fewer deaths if we digitized healthcare!

Jacopo Fo’s article for Il Fatto Quotidiano

I’ll tell you a story: on March 10, 2020 in the computer room of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità a Statistics specialist presses a button on his pc and automatically generated colored diagrams appear on the screen that show in real time the number of deaths in the last 12 hours, which highlight the type of deaths.

Immediately the official realizes that he is there an unusual increase of the dead in Healthcare Residences. The alarm went off and within an hour the leaders of the ISS warned the Minister of Health. A quick survey, thanks to the data available to the ISS, on hospitalizations in the Rsa, allows to identify an abnormal number of transfers from the Lombard hospitals to the Rsa, of patients suffering from coronavirus on the mend but still infectious, as shown by the medical records. All this information is provided by the central computer, an occupying beast 100 square meters for 4 meters high.

This could have happened in Korea but it did not happen in Italy, because as of April 4th the Superior Health Institute did not even know how many Senior citizens they were dead. He stated this publicly Graziano Below in Press conference, providing the data of 1082 RSA out of 3420 surveyed, that is, those who kindly replied to a letter from the ISS!

(I hope you are horrified: in full emergency the majority of the directors of the RSA have not provided vital data to the Istituto Superiore della Sanità !!!)

Moreover, the Italian State does not have a megacomputer capable of collecting and processing all the data, health and non-health, of which the State itself is in possession. For example, i Common they necessarily know how many deaths there have been, but they don’t know which ones died in the RSA … In reality, the ISS doesn’t even know how many elderly people live in the RSA. Graziano Onder in the press conference admitted that “they are estimated to be 280.000”!

And when the general practitioners of Lombardy and Piedmont, Syracusans and who knows where, began to send emails to the regional health care, asking tampons for suspicious patients, masks, anti-contagion suits, visors, often these messages did not even arrive because the e-mail boxes were full. Too bad it wasn’t there an emergency system, it is a pity that the reports of general practitioners could not be counted to update a global map of the spread of the pandemic.

I could go on with many other examples but I’ll stop here. I think I get the idea of how we are after decades of waste and theft. And I could develop the same discourse with regard to all sectors of the state.

They tell us there is no money. It is the mantra of the majority of TV commentators and politicians. But it’s not true. Every year we throw away hundreds of billions.

And definitely there Health it ranks first in the absurdity of wild waste. But another sector is a bottomless pit: energy efficiency! Today we talk about aid to the economy, right. But these aids are still new debts that someone will have to pay sooner or later. Little is said instead of the need to change the paradigm and cut the endless prairies of the waste and of occasions lost, and still few have understood how much wealth we waste by destroying the environment and resources.

With the group of Ecofuturo Festival and some fellow university professors and researchers made one studio showing that the Italy system throw the toilet 200 billion euros per year and give up hundreds of thousands of jobs.

In the last issue of magazine Ecofuture, available for free as the study just mentioned, we update the picture by explaining the enormous potential of new technologies in the photovoltaic sector, biogas / chemical splitting of methane (i.e. nothing burns, zero smog!). Other innovations that can save you money billions they concern the motorways of the sea, that is, making trucks travel on ferries along the coasts, the restructuring of rail transport, the Decomar system to clean up the seabed of ports, reservoirs and rivers …

And here too I stop.

Italy up to now has not been able to take full advantage of the technological progress. He did not understand the danger of pollution and the abandonment of the care for woods and rivers, the value of earthquake prevention, digitalization and ecotechnologies …

Perhaps now someone more is realizing that this stupidity pays off. A frightening, human and economic cost.

Wait the next disaster or do you start pushing for change too?
