WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (Reuters) – The United States will require all travelers entering its territory by air to show a negative test for the coronavirus carried out 24 hours before their departure, amid concerns over the novel variant of the coronavirus, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said late Tuesday.
Currently, vaccinated international travelers can have a negative coronavirus test performed within three days of departure.
This new measure would apply to both US citizens and foreign nationals.
A spokesperson for the CDC confirmed that the agency is working on changing its travel screening rules “as we learn more about the Omicron variant; one of the changes would reduce the timeframe for mandatory screening for all international travelers one day before their departure for the United States “.
The administration is also considering requiring travelers to take another coronavirus test within three to five days of arriving in the United States, officials said.
The new rules could be announced Thursday, but it was not specified when they could come into force.
