Coronavirus spreads in Latin America, now 50 deaths in the US

The coronavirus spreads slowly in Latin America. In Central and South America, the number of countries where infections and deaths are reported is increasing steadily.

Guatemala, Paraguay, Venezuela, Uruguay, Suriname reported the first cases of illness yesterday. The first deaths occurred in Ecuador and two people have died of the virus in Argentina. Five deaths have been reported to date in Latin America. Several countries have closed airspace to flights from Europe.

China’s increase remains limited

Thirteen deaths were reported in China, six more than yesterday. Eleven new infections have been confirmed. There were eight yesterday, the lowest number since registration began in January. The total number of infections in the country now stands at 80,824. 3189 people were killed.

All thirteen people died in Hubei Province, where the outbreak began. Six deaths were recorded yesterday. The death toll in the province is now at 3,075.

Victims US and Z Korea

The fiftieth died in the US. At least one infection has now been diagnosed in all states except West Virginia. Most people died in Washington State. There, the death toll rose by six to 37 yesterday.

South Korea reported 107 new infections. The total now stands at 8086. The country reported more cases of recovery than infection for the second day in a row: 204 patients were discharged from the hospital.

Measures Czech Republic, N Zealand

The Czech government has decided to close all stores for ten days, except for food stores, pharmacies and drugstores.

In New Zealand, the national memorial service for the mosque attacks in Christchurch has been called off. The service would be held tomorrow. Prime Minister Ardern: “We are very saddened by the cancellation. But when commemorating such a terrible tragedy, we should not risk further damage.”

A right-wing extremist opened fire on two mosques a year ago, on March 15. He shot dead 51 people. Thousands of people were expected to attend the memorial tomorrow.
