Most detained, 33 people, were demonstrators participating in protests in the streets Madrid. Young people contesting sanitary restrictions threw stones at the police there, set fire to containers and destroyed shop windows.
According to the Warsaw daily “El Mundo”, extreme left-wing organizations are behind the riots in the capital. The newspaper says the violent events may have been pre-planned, as evidenced by the Molotov cocktails found in one of Madrid’s buildings.
In addition to Madrid, riots took place in over 20 Spanish cities on Sunday, including in Logrono, Oviedo, Bilbao, Granada, Málaga, Zaragoza, Burgos and Valencia. All in all, violent attacks by opponents of epidemic restrictions continue in Spain for five days.
In the evening’s announcement, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that his government would not shy away from protests organized by “minority groups”, which he believed were trying to destabilize the public order.
A state of epidemic threat has been in force in Spain for a week, including no leaving homes between 23-6. It will last until May 9, 2021.
