Coronavirus: six out of 10 Belgians have a mask at home

The older the people surveyed by the University of Antwerp, the more thoughtful they were.

Six out of 10 Belgians already have a ready-to-use mouth mask to wear in public transport and the most popular places from 4 May. This is what emerges from the weekly study carried out by the University of Antwerp in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. A quarter of those surveyed have several copies at home.

This week’s survey focused on the topic of mouth masks. The results show that 40% of Belgian respondents did not yet have a mouth mask on Tuesday. 33% percent have ordered one or more, and 25% will make their own mask. 24% of them expect to obtain one through their employer, 13% depend on their own municipality. The older the respondents, the more forward-thinking they were. Another lesson: more educated people are less likely to wear a mask.

A certain weariness

In addition, as a study by the University of Ghent had already indicated, a certain weariness is felt with regard to the health crisis. This is also reflected in the participation figures in the weekly Antwerp study. 120,000 people participated in the seventh wave and 10,000 only partially responded to it. “This remains a very relevant study,” says researcher Koen Pepermans.

560,000 Belgians took part in the very first societal survey of the Antwerp university.
