Coronavirus – Several countries placed in “Orange zone”: what does this color code mean?

Foreign Affairs has associated travel zone color codes so that Belgians know which recommendations to follow. This Sunday, the list of green, orange and red zones has been updated. The main innovation concerns the list of orange zones in the direction of returns: several countries have been placed on this list (see the link to our article below).

Foreign Affairs calls for “heightened vigilance” for those returning from these orange areas. But what does this mean in concrete terms? We asked Yves Van Laethem the question. The infectious disease specialist and inter-federal spokesperson for the fight against the coronavirus was the guest of RTL INFO 19H this Sunday. He was interviewed by Salima Belabbas.

Salima Belabbas: What does this orange code mean in concrete terms. What does increased vigilance mean?

Yves Van Laethem: You have to watch yourself. You have to be careful, so definitely wear your mask, redouble your attention regarding hand washing and social distancing. You have to watch yourself, and if something happens consult your doctor. And certainly not be confined to the orange code.

Salima Belabbas: This list of countries accessible or accessible under conditions continues to evolve. What do you recommend to Belgians who are still hesitant to go on vacation abroad?

Yves Van Laethem: Red, we’re not going. Orange, we think about it. Because orange can go green, but orange can also go red. So it should help to consider or reconsider the place where we are going on vacation. You should be aware that green does not prevent a possible change to red depending on rapidly changing local circumstances.

Salima Belabbas: Do you expect this list to evolve in the coming days?

Yves Van Laethem: It’s totally unpredictable. But in the coming days, normally not. This list will be reviewed at least once a week, more needed if necessary, if something happens. It is a bit like the unexpected of the holidays and you should know that this year we are leaving with some unforeseen potential.
