Coronavirus: Samsung disinfects your smartphone for free

Samsung is committed to disinfecting your smartphone for free to fight the coronavirus epidemic. In a handful of countries, the South Korean manufacturer has launched a special service called “Galaxy Sanitizing Service” to stem the spread of Covid-19. The initiative will soon arrive in France.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

According to our colleagues at SamMobile, Samsung’s disinfection service is available free of charge to users of a Galaxy smartphone, Galaxy Watch or a pair of Galaxy Buds. To disinfect your devices, simply go to a Samsung Service Center or a Samsung Experience Store.

Employees of the firm will not just clean your phone or your connected watch with a cloth. To avoid the growth of bacteria, Samsung uses a germicidal UV-C lamp. The company prefers the use of ultraviolet radiation to that of aggressive chemicals. Samsung is concerned that common disinfectant solutions may damage the oleophobic coating on the screen or the fingerprint reader under the screen.

Samsung claims to have tested the disinfection devices used by the Galaxy Sanitizing Service to verify that UV-C light does not cause damage to the phones. In addition, the firm recalls that all germs and bacteria present on a smartphone cannot be removed by UV-C rays.
