Coronavirus reproduction rate increases in Occitania

As we have entered a new stage of deconfinement, the virus is still circulating. And worryingly, its reproduction rate is increasing.

The reproduction rate indicates the number of people who will be infected, on average, by an infected person. Above 1, it indicates a dynamic of the virus.

A value greater than 1 favors an increasing trend in the number of cases.

Public health France

In mainland France, three regions are concerned: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Normandy and Occitanie.

A virus becomes harmless when its reproduction rate (R0) reaches zero. However, good control of a virus – vaccine and / or targeted drugs – prevents a reproduction rate from causing serious epidemic tension even if it exceeds 1. This is how the Reproduction rate for seasonal flu is 1.3 and that for measles is 18.

Why is Occitania ironed at a reproduction rate greater than 1?

This confinement made it possible to lower the rate of reproduction of the virus, (this was its objective, in particular to reduce the pressure on the resuscitation services of hospitals),

Logically, with deconfinement, we multiply the contacts and therefore the risk of spread.

Reduced alertness

An increase in contacts in our daily and professional life which leads to a decrease in vigilance, particularly with regard to barrier gestures. It is at this moment that the clusters appear, new sources of infection.

Daily life, professional life, the new sources of infection

Around Toulouse, on June 1, during a family meal, 52 people were in contact with an infected person returning from Germany.

More recently in the Gard, several outbreaks have appeared.

11 seasonal workers on four farms south of Nîmes and 78 residents of Beaucaire tested positive for coronavirus.

The Occitanie regional health agency specifies that the usual isolation measures have been taken and that the situation is under control.

The fact remains that the virus is still circulating in the region and the neighboring region of PACA, so caution is advised, as are barrier measures.
