Coronavirus: possibly lowest number of infections since September and research into third shot

Corona leads to more reports of nuisance

In 2020, the corona pandemic has led to more nuisance by young people and noise pollution in The Hague. As a result, the police had to intervene more often. The ‘general dissatisfaction’ also continued last year. This manifested itself in more (in total 1719) and ‘extreme’ demonstrations. This ‘exceptional year’ therefore demanded a lot from the police and the judiciary, says Mayor Jan van Zanen in retrospect.

According to the mayor of The Hague, the corona pandemic had direct and indirect effects on crime. Offenses such as domestic burglary decreased – because people worked from home more – while cybercrime actually increased, writes Van Zanen in the ‘security card 2020’.

Light at the end of the corona tunnel is getting closer

The corona wave is almost a thing of the past. The number of positive tests continues to fall, thanks to vaccinations and the warmer weather. About 15,000 people have probably tested positive in the past week. That would be the lowest weekly figure since September.

The exact number will come from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Tuesday. At the end of April, the institute received more than 55,000 reports in seven days. By the end of May, that number had fallen to just over 20,000.

In the six days since the last update, 12,958 new corona cases have been registered. On average, there are 2160 per day. This could bring the weekly figure around 15,000. That would be almost 27 percent less than last week.

Hospitals investigate effect of third injection in vulnerable patient

Hospitals occasionally see corona patients with a weak immune system being admitted, while they are fully vaccinated. That is why they are investigating whether vulnerable patients need more injections to be well protected against the corona virus. That writes the AD.

According to the newspaper, several hospitals note that even after two vaccinations, people are sometimes so sick that they have to be admitted. With two shots, they are not yet sufficiently protected against the virus. “But these are not people who are otherwise perfectly healthy,” says Bram Goorhuis, coordinator of the corona departments of Amsterdam UMC and internist. It concerns people with a weak immune system, for example because they already have a certain disease or because they use drugs that affect the immune system.

Doctors and scientists are now investigating whether these patients need more than two shots. ‘We would prefer to protect those patients as well. It may work if we offer more injections’, says Goorhuis. This has already been decided in France before. Vulnerable patients receive a third vaccination after four weeks.
