A small group of people have an increased risk of certain cardiovascular diseases after a corona infection. These are mainly diseases caused by blood clots, for example in the lungs, and the heart rhythm disorder atrial fibrillation. After 60 days, the risk of these problems decreased. This is evident from research by UMC Utrecht on the initiative of the Heart Foundation, which also financed the research.
The researchers discovered this through the data of more than 220,000 people who had experienced a corona infection to analyse. 95% of these patients were able to stay at home after the corona infection. Cardiovascular problems occurred in only 1% of people. This is a very small group. Ultimately, this involved large numbers of patients, because many people became infected with the virus in the first and second corona waves. Patients who become seriously ill due to a corona infection are therefore given medication in the initial phase to prevent blood clots.
No increased risk of heart inflammation
The researchers emphasize that there is no particular group of people who have an increased risk of complaints from blood clots or arrhythmias. The problems are more common in people between the ages of 40 and 60, and more so in men. This study showed no increased risk of heart inflammation due to corona.
People also have a temporary increased risk of cardiovascular problems with other respiratory infections such as the flu, especially in people with cardiovascular disease and the elderly. This emphasizes the importance of the flu shot in these people.
Earlier Results from this research group already showed that corona patients with cardiovascular disease or diabetes have a greater chance of ending up in hospital than corona patients without these conditions. These people therefore need a corona vaccination. They are therefore called upon for this, as well as for the flu shot.
The Heart Foundation funded this research from donations we received specifically for research into the effects of corona on the heart and in people with cardiovascular disease. The research results have been published in European Heart Journal Open.
