An outbreak of coronavirus infections among patients and employees at SAMS hospital (Medical and Social Assistance Service of the Bank Employees Union), in Lisbon, led to the closure of the urgencies of that health establishment.

The decision was released in a determination this Friday, signed by the delegate of health of the Clusters of Health Centers of Lisbon (ACES), Mário Pereira.

The determination text, to which the Renaissance had access, refers to the suspension as a “public health precautionary measure”, but news from the last few days shows a situation of the spread of Covid-19 in that unit.

Although the document speaks only of the suspension of urgencies, a source of Renaissance says that “everything is closed except for patients already hospitalized. There are no surgeries, neither urgent. Consultations canceled and only by phone ”, but that the services of“ oncology and radiotherapy continue to work ”.

On the exact Monday, the Southern Medical Doctors’ Union had already denounced the Renaissance what six doctors in that hospital unit were infected with coronavirus.

The exact number of cases at SAMS hospital is not public. When the first news of the spread of the disease at SAMS appeared, and confronted with it, the administration replied to Lusa that all cases are reported to the Directorate-General for Health, which centralizes the information.

Portugal had the first Covid-19 case on March 2. Over the past 18 days the number of infected people has risen, this Friday exceeding the thousand barrier. There are six to mourn in Portuguese territory.
