The number of young children hospitalized with covid is increasing week by week. In question: the very strong circulation of omicron within a population little (even not) vaccinated. Fortunately, no deaths have been recorded among the juniors.

SDuring the period from January 10 to 23, 2022, 591 children aged 0 to 11 were hospitalized due to covid-19 in Belgium. That is, on average, more than 42 children admitted to hospital every day because of this damn virus. Over the same period of time, the Sciensano institute lists nearly 3,000 covid admissions for which the patient’s age is known. In other words, nearly one in five hospital admissions today is for a child under 12 years of age. This data related to the age of hospitalized people has only been compiled in detail for a month in Sciensano’s reports. It is therefore not possible to make a historical comparison, including the previous waves. However, the aggregated hospital data (collected in another way) clearly suggests that this is the first time that the number and proportion of young people hospitalized are so high.
