OMT advises strict lockdown, only essential shops open
The OMT recommends a strict lockdown to inhibit the rapid spread of the omikron variant. Sources report this to the political editors of RTL Nieuws. If it is up to the OMT, only essential shops such as supermarkets will remain open. The outgoing cabinet will determine tomorrow whether that will happen.
—
If the cabinet adopts the OMT’s advice, a press moment will probably follow soon in which the new measures will be explained. During a previous lockdown, only essential shops such as supermarkets were allowed to remain open. Whether that will happen is up to the government. They may still decide to make exceptions for some sectors.

Saturday afternoon emergency cabinet consultation on OMT advice
The cabinet will discuss the new OMT advice on the omikron variant of the corona virus in a digital emergency meeting this Saturday. There is a possibility that the emergency consultations will lead to decisions about new measures, after which a press moment will soon follow.

‘Hard(er) lockdown is lurking’
Outgoing Minister of Health De Jonge (CDA) does not want to anticipate any new measures related to the – more contagious – omikron variant of the corona virus. “But if it’s necessary to sharply slow down that virus, slow it down — to slow that wave that’s expected, we’ll take it. We will hear from the OMT whether that is necessary,” said the person responsible for the corona virus on behalf of the cabinet on Friday afternoon after the Council of Ministers to, among others, the NOS. “We are concerned, the spread is very fast.”
—
The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) will meet on Friday evening to issue new advice to the cabinet. The ministry is taking into account an additional press conference next Tuesday. Whether or not that will happen will be decided during the weekend. The Netherlands will be in an evening lockdown until January 14, 2022, including early Christmas holidays for primary schools. The question is whether all this is enough to prevent a new peak in hospitals. If not, stricter corona measures will most likely follow.

–
‘What we know in any case is that the people who have had their first and second injection are not sufficiently protected against the new variant.’ De Jonge therefore calls on people to make a booster appointment if they can. “Get him now, it’s really necessary.”
—
However, it is very busy at the GGD call centers. He asks people who have trouble making an appointment, for example because there seems to be no room, to try again later.
—
‘It is being scaled up incredibly hard. If it doesn’t work now: tomorrow there will be new ones slots and again the next day’, says Minister De Jonge. According to De Jonge, everyone must have had their turn in the second half of January.

Another extra resit and staggered final exams
Due to corona, graduation students are also allowed to take an extra resit this school year and spread their exams over two periods. Outgoing education minister Arie Slob (ChristenUnie) wants to give secondary school students the opportunity to ‘complete their school period on a good note’.
—
This year, VMBO students do not have to take final exams for three or four, but only for two vocational profile subjects. A school exam is sufficient for the remaining profile subjects. Students who take the state examination may also bring a confidential counselor with them this school year.

Boosting faster can have consequences for injection children
If millions of people have to receive a booster shot against the coronavirus in the coming weeks, it could have a ‘limited impact’ on the first shots for young children. That is what the Ministry of Health says. In the coming week, the injections for children aged 5 to 11 with medical problems will start. In January it’s the turn of their peers without those risks.
—
Both the adults and the children have to go to the vaccination locations of the GGDs to get their shot. But they don’t get the same dose. Adults are given three times as much vaccine as young children. Exactly how this is combined will have to be worked out in the near future.

Strike through sports gala in The Hague
The Hague Sports Gala will not take place next Tuesday due to the current corona measures. As an alternative, the organization is now traveling through The Hague with a champion cart from The Hague to announce the winners. Those who win the prizes can be seen on Sunday 9 January 2022 in the Haagse Kampioenenkar broadcast on TV West.

OM is prosecuting agents for violence at Malieveld demonstration
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) will prosecute two officers for the violence they used during a corona protest on March 14 at Malieveld in The Hague. The prosecutor believes that two officers used disproportionate force in the detention of a protester, who was injured during his arrest.

Top amateur football competition matches canceled in January
The KNVB football association has decided to cancel all competition matches in the second division, third divisions and main divisions for the month of January. Now that the evening lockdown has been extended until January 14, 2022, the winter break will be extended. The KNVB does not consider it responsible, if training is allowed again in the evenings from mid-January, and then – due to the risk of injuries – immediately resume the competitions.
—
It has now been announced that all matches in the A category will be postponed. This means that all first teams and the high-playing youth, women and other senior teams will see their competition matches cancelled. The recreational players in senior and youth football will continue to play.
—
‘The priority is to finish the competitions, possibly with an adapted set-up for the post-competition. Due to the arrears that have accumulated in the meantime, the match days calendar will have to be adjusted,” the football association announced on Friday. “The most favorable scenario is that relaxation will come after January 14 and these competitions can be resumed on the weekend of February 5 and 6.”

Tuesday new press conference because of omikron?
A few days after the introduction of the latest corona measures, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) will meet again on Friday evening. The reason is the emergence of the omikron variant. If the consequences of omikron are as serious as the RIVM fears, it cannot be ruled out that extra corona measures will be taken by the outgoing cabinet before the Christmas holidays.
—
The ministry is taking into account a new press conference by Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) and corona minister Hugo de Jonge (CDA) next Tuesday. Whether that will actually happen will probably become clear in the course of next weekend.
