New York State recorded 540 more deaths from the novel coronavirus on April 17, 90 less than 24 hours earlier, the figure at a low for more than two weeks, announced on Saturday Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was cautiously optimistic.

He added that the number of people hospitalized for the disease had dropped to 16,967, a figure that fell by more than 1,300 in 72 hours, while pointing out that admissions to intensive care units were also on a downward trend.
“If we look at the last three days, we could estimate that we have passed the plateau and that we are starting the descent, which would be very good news, said Andrew Cuomo.
With more than 13,000 deaths, New York is by far the most severely affected state in the United States, with the country as a whole deploring more than 37,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus, the highest total in the world.
