The officially reported numbers refer only to infections that have been proven by tests. It is unclear how many people actually get new infections every day and have been infected so far without being tested positive. Antibody testing is expected to resolve this issue in the coming months.
The official number of deaths describes how many people have died from the virus. In how many cases the infection was the cause of death, however, cannot be determined from this (more on this read here).
When making cross-border comparisons, it must be borne in mind that sometimes different criteria are used to record an infection and to count deaths.
