Almost doubling of positive corona tests, highest number since July
The number of positive corona tests has exploded in the past 24 hours. RIVM registered 3,746 new cases, the highest number since July 29. Compared to last Wednesday, when 1909 corona cases were counted, this is almost a doubling.
—
More than 2900 new corona cases came to light on Tuesday. The weekly total now stands at 19,644. That’s 62 percent higher than the weekly total through last Wednesday, the largest weekly increase since July 18. RIVM already indicated on Tuesday that the expected fall increase seems to have started. In addition, the number of positive tests is increasing in each age group. The reproduction number, which indicates how quickly the coronavirus is spreading, is also increasing.

Singing helps lung covid patients: ‘I can kind of reset myself’
It looks like an ordinary choir with eight ladies, they also sing pure. But beautiful singing is not the most important thing in this group. All participants are lung covid patients and have been suffering from the aftermath of the coronavirus for many months. Singing teacher Iris van der Made does not only focus on singing with these ladies. ‘The singing brings the breath down, but these participants also have to set their limits very well. The energy is often very low, so setting boundaries is a must.’

Another increase in the number of corona patients in hospitals
The number of corona patients in Dutch hospitals has again increased, reports the National Coordination Center for Patients Distribution (LCPS). There are currently 524 patients with Covid-19 in intensive care units and nursing units. That is twelve more than Tuesday.
—
It is the fifth day in a row that the number of corona patients in hospitals has increased. There are now 137 seriously ill corona patients on the ICs, one less than on Tuesday. The ICs saw nine new Covid patients enter, but because more people were fired or died, the total number of corona patients on the ICs fell. Tuesday was the first day since September 23 that more than 500 people with corona were again in a hospital.

Gommers warns: do not relax, peak of 400 corona patients cannot handle IC
According to Diederik Gommers, the intensive care unit is not ready for a peak of 400 corona patients in January. That’s what the internist says against the NOS.
—
Gommers, also chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care and OMT member: ‘Our nurses are really through psychologically, they need more time. There are now 130 patients in the ICUs, we can handle 180, but not a peak of 400. We then have to scale back regular care and we really don’t want that.’

New risk level: corona situation throughout the Netherlands is worrying
The state of the corona epidemic in the Netherlands is worrying. At that level of risk, the entire country is in a new warning system that the government has put in place. It is the successor to the regional risk levels, which were abolished last month.
—
The new system has three levels of risk: vigilant, worrisome and serious. These are determined on the basis of the seven-day average of the number of hospital admissions and the number of admissions to intensive care units. Regional risk levels also included the number of positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants, but that is no longer a factor.

GGDs no longer take the first corona shots with Moderna
The GGDs stop taking the first shots with Moderna’s corona vaccine. In a quarterly report, the umbrella organization GGD GHOR Nederland writes ‘the use of Moderna by phasing out the GGDs (for the time being’).
—
‘In order to further optimize the vaccine portfolio and make it more efficient, it has been decided to stop using the first vaccinations with Moderna’, says GGD GHOR. This means that only the first shots with the vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech are currently being administered. Just like with Moderna, two shots of that vaccine are needed to be fully vaccinated. Janssen’s vaccine is also still being used, but no second dose is needed.
—
Fewer and fewer first corona shots are being taken. More than 43,000 people received their first corona jab last week. At the peak of the vaccination campaign this summer, there were still hundreds of thousands of first shots per week.

LHV: no more role for general practitioners in new vaccination campaigns
GPs can no longer play a role in new large-scale vaccination campaigns, such as the recent corona vaccinations. They are ‘with their hands in their hair’ to complete the occupation of their practice, reports the National Association of General Practitioners (LHV).
—
Due to catch-up care and a rising demand for care, it is busier than ever, according to the association. Holes in the schedules of general practices cannot be filled. The workload has increased for most general practitioners and three quarters think the workload is really too high, the LHV concludes after an investigation.
—
‘More than half of the general practitioners have less energy and there are hardly any opportunities to recover. Many GPs walk on their gums. We must break this negative spiral if we want to keep general practitioner care accessible’, warns the organization.

‘Schools are unsure about trips abroad for a corona pass’
Where foreign school trips are usually a high point in the school career, they now mainly lead to heated discussions. That is what the Stichting Voor Werkende Ouders (For Working Parents) is aware of, reports De Telegraaf. School boards doubt whether they should continue, because not every student is vaccinated.
—
‘It is a growing problem’, says Marjet Winsemius, director of Voor Werkende Ouders. “Now that the weather can try to make schools the trips that were canceled by corona, but the corona pass is now causing nuisance.”
—
According to her, the pass creates uncertainty among parents and despair among the schools. ‘In principle, they are not allowed to ask children whether they have a QR code or not. To avoid that conversation, the trips are taken off the schedule.’

De Jonge: economically restrictive rules gone sooner than corona pass
Corona measures that are ‘economically impeding’ are released earlier than the corona admission ticket, says care minister Hugo de Jonge. “That corona pass is at most annoying,” said the minister about this in the talk show Op1.
—
The digital proof that allows people to access a restaurant or museum will last longer than other rules, such as the 75 percent maximum capacity for certain events and the midnight closing time for catering.
—
‘The first thing you hope you can get rid of is that 75 percent, and the night closure,’ says De Jonge. Furthermore, he does not want to prejudge too much whether the evidence still has to be shown all winter or other relaxations: at the beginning of November, the cabinet will weigh the advice of the Outbreak Management Team on this. At the end of last week, the minister said that it is too early to answer the question of which rules can possibly be released.

OMT: corona forecast for autumn and winter worse than expected
The forecasts for how corona will develop in the coming autumn and winter months are worse than previously modeled. The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) writes this in an advice to the government. According to the OMT, there is ‘a greater degree of uncertainty, including a sharp increase in hospital and IC admissions’. That is why the experts advise not to relax further now.
—
The cabinet will decide at the beginning of November whether or not to relax further. The OMT will meet on 29 October to discuss the state of affairs and then advise the outgoing cabinet. Then it is better to estimate what is and is not possible. “As we move forward a few weeks, the prognosis will become more accurate and the risks of any easing will be better defined,” the team said.
