The latest figures published by the Sciensano Public Health Institute this weekend show that the number of Sars-CoV-2 contaminations continues to increase in our region. There were 1,231 per day on average between July 7 and July 13, a 76% increase from the previous week. Nearly 63,200 tests were performed daily, for a positivity rate of 2.1%. We see a higher positivity rate in children under 10 years old (2%), 10-19 year olds (2.9%) and 20-39 year olds (2.6%), than in 40- 64 (1.2%) and over 65s (0.9%).
The increased circulation of the virus does not translate into increased deaths. Over the same period, 1.6 people died per day on average from the virus (-42%).
Between July 10 and July 16, on the other hand, there was a 21% increase in hospitalizations due to coronavirus. However, these remain limited to an average of 21.3 admissions per day. A total of 239 people were hospitalized on Friday due to Covid-19, including 81 patients treated in intensive care, or 4% of the country’s intensive care capacity. A week earlier, they were 240 including 93 in intensive care.
The virus’s reproduction rate is 1.22. When it is greater than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic is tending to accelerate. The incidence, which indicates the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 117.7 over 14 days. It varies from 31 in the German-speaking Community to 178 in the Brussels Region.
At the same time, the vaccination campaign continues. Over 82% of the adult population received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 57.3% received both doses. Among those over 65, 87.7% of the population is fully vaccinated.
“The risk of seeing the variants progress”
It should also be noted that the federal police will strengthen border controls, at airports, train stations and on highways. She announced it on Saturday in a press release. “As more and more countries are turning red, lit-on, the risk of seeing the variants progress is very present. “
In addition to the control actions already planned by the federal traffic police on the highways, additional disposal units will be set up during the busiest hours and during crossover weekends. All international high speed trains will be checked. Finally, there are plans to intensify intra-Schengen controls at airports.
