The Mayor of Macedo de Cavaleiros defends the intervention of military personnel in the control of arrivals, if the number of emigrants returning to the municipality continues to increase, in the midst of the new coronavirus pandemic.

In statements to Renaissance, Benjamim Rodrigues recognizes the difficulty in ensuring compliance with the isolation imposed in the district of Bragança, to control the spread of Covid-19.

“I defend the intervention of the military when this situation has increased influx and the security forces of the GNR already have some difficulties, so that there is no accumulation of vehicles at the border,” he says.

Immediate military monitoring

The mayor says, moreover, that the military could already help in monitoring who circulates in the region.

“I have also already suggested, and the District Civil Protection Commission itself, that army personnel help to raise awareness and monitor citizens. We can do this without them having to leave their vehicles and without contact. a job that is possible to do and is also an issue of civic responsibility. ”

On Thursday, the Bragança district imposed, with immediate effect, mandatory quarantine on those returning from abroad, during the new coronavirus pandemic. Prophylactic isolation lasts for 14 days from the date of arrival.

The municipality has so far recorded two confirmed cases of Covid-19: the first was a 66-year-old emigrant, returned from France, who has since infected a 83-year-old man.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already infected 1,280 people in Portugal and killed 12 people.
