Coronavirus in UK Britain. Latest record: 2,659 new infections

Eight deaths from COVID-19 have been registered in the past 24 hours in the UK and 2,659 new coronavirus infections have been detected, the British government reported on Wednesday (September 9).

The number of deaths is clearly lower than on Tuesday (32), which was the highest since the end of July. For now, it is still difficult to assess whether Tuesday’s increase was a one-off event, related to, for example, supplementing unregistered deaths from the weekend, or whether the growing number of new infections began to translate into deaths.

From the beginning of August, their number remained at a stable – and low compared to previous months – level, until Tuesday never exceeding 20.

As a result, the current death toll of coronavirus has increased to 41,594, of which 36,931 people have died in England, 2,499 – in Scotland, 1,597 – in Wales, and 567 – in Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom ranks fifth in the world in terms of the number of deaths, behind the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico.

The balance of new infections is slightly higher than Tuesday’s, but lower than that of Sunday and Monday, when it jumped drastically from previous levels. Since the start of the epidemic, 355,219 SARS-CoV-2 infections have been detected in the UK.

Data on new deaths include all those recorded between 17 on Monday and at 17 on Tuesday and which occurred within 28 days of coronavirus test confirmation, and data on infections are for 24 hours between 9 on Tuesday and at 9 on Wednesday.

There were 821 COVID-19 patients in hospitals, according to data from Tuesday, which does not include Northern Ireland.

In light of the rising number of new infections, the British government announced on Wednesday that in England, from next Monday, a ban on gathering in groups larger than six people, both indoors and outdoors, will enter into force.
