Coronavirus in the world: first rise in infections on a planetary scale since January

The number of cases of Covid-19 infections reported per week across the globe has increased for the first time since the end of January, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) communicating on Tuesday.

During the second week of March, the infections recorded were 8% higher than those of the previous week.

More than 11 million new cases of coronavirus and 43,000 deaths attributed to Covid-19 or having also contracted the virus were recorded the week of March 7 to 13.

The increase in the number of cases is particularly notable in the Western Pacific and in parts of Africa, with an increase of 29% and 12% compared to the past week. In Europe, the increase was 2%.

A decline is however observed in the eastern Mediterranean, in South East Asia and in North and South America.

The total toll of confirmed coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic has reached 455 million, while 6 million deaths have been reported.
