Coronavirus in the USA: New York is dead

It is a famous scene in the cult film «Vanilla Sky». Leading actor Tom Cruise notices one morning that there are no cars in New York and there are no people to be seen. He panics, runs screaming to the deserted Times Square – and then wakes up sweating in bed. Everything was just a nightmare.

A nightmare that has now become a reality. The corona virus has hit the metropolis of millions. And now produces images that were never thought possible. The deserted Times Square, a practically deserted Central Park, abandoned subway stations. And hardly any cars on the otherwise notoriously congested streets. There is an alarm mood in New York.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says: “New York is the epicenter of the crisis.” There are over 5000 sick people there, on Friday alone 14 people died of the coronavirus within ten hours. At least one dead every hour.

The virus is also rampant in the rest of the country. The United States is now the third most coronavirus-affected country in the world. Behind China and Italy. The number of infected people soared by more than ten times to more than 25,000 cases within just one week. And everything is missing. Staff, places in the intensive care unit, corona tests and ventilators. The US healthcare system also appears to be poorly prepared for such a pandemic.

Almost a quarter of the US population, 80 million out of 330 million inhabitants, are now affected by more or less harsh curfews. Such restrictions existed in California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

And the US is already showing how devastating the virus is to the economy. Millions of Americans have already lost their jobs because companies can no longer manufacture and sell. Kevin Hasset, a former advisor to US President Donald Trump, believes that one million people could lose their jobs this month.

First numbers from US states are loud «U.S News & World Report» Because it’s a gloomy picture: In Michigan, New York and Colorado jobless requests are exploding – they have increased tenfold. In Texas, the oil boom is also over and the number of job seekers in Houston has increased fourfold in just one week.
