New York City’s vaccination requirement went into effect Monday, November 1. The new rules did not rule out mandatory vaccinations for police, firefighters and other emergency services. As a result, there are not enough people in the fire departments, as many firefighters went on sick leave in protest.
“Fire departments remained open, but 18 of 350 were out of order. Many of them are understaffed,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.
According to Nigro, approximately 2,300 firefighters.
“This staff shortage can end immediately if participants stop getting sick when they are not sick. Once they come to their senses and stop using sick leave inappropriately, they will be able to help not only the townspeople, but also their brothers and sisters who are completing the units, “he said.
As of Sunday, every fourth firefighter in New York didn’t even get the first dose of vaccine as required. One in six police officers and one in six sanitary workers is not vaccinated against coronavirus.
The city’s mayor warned that firefighters who feign illness could face punishment if proven.
