Germany asks for fewer fans in the Eurocup
German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer asked the British government and UEFA to reduce the number of fans allowed at Wembley Stadium for Eurocup matches, As Delta Variant Cases Increase, very contagious. “It seems irresponsible to me that tens of thousands of people congregate in narrow spaces in countries at risk due to the highly contagious Delta variant,” as is currently the case in the United Kingdom, said Seehofer, also Minister of Sports, in an interview with the newspaper. In Germany, where the Allianz Arena stadium also hosts Eurocup matches, the maximum capacity is 20%, about 14,000 people. For Seehofer, the 20% rule would have to serve as a “criterion” for all other parties.
The United Kingdom is experiencing an increase in coronavirus infections due to the Delta variant, detected for the first time in India. Germany classified the country in a risk zone affected by the variants, reducing the possibility of travel between both countries. Germans or residents of Germany returning from the UK are required to quarantine for 14 days, including vaccinated and immunized people.
The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has on more than one occasion expressed her concern about the risks posed by the European Championship in the face of the spread of the Delta variant and regretted the lack of coordination at the European level on the restrictions to be imposed on travelers from of risk countries.
In Germany, Delta variant is responsible for about half of new covid-19 infections, Lothar Wieler, president of the Robert-Koch Institute for Health Surveillance, told the media.
