Austria plans to confine the unvaccinated this Sunday
Alexander Schallenberg, Chancellor of Austria, acknowledged Thursday the possibility of confining the population not vaccinated against COVID, since it is “inevitable”, in the worsening of the pandemic situation. Therefore, the Austrian government may decide this Sunday the imposition of a blockade on those people who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“The objective is very clear, that this Sunday we give the green light to a national closure for the unvaccinated. We will take this step now and my wish is that we take it this Sunday and at the national level for the nine provinces“, has explained.
Although the chancellor has not determined the exactness of when it will take effect, other areas such as Upper Austria and Salzburg have announced that they will impose this measure on Monday, without waiting for the Executive’s decision.
What’s more, 65% of the Austrian population is fully vaccinated, which is one of the lower immunization rates in Western Europe. Mainly, it is due to Vaccine skepticism and far-right anti-vaccine opinion in Parliament.
