More than 100,000 vaccines thrown away in Madrid
The Community of Madrid has admitted the discard of 117,994 vaccines against COVID after “having meant the deadline for their administration or due to breaks and incidents in the cold chain”, Of which the 90% correspond to AstraZeneca or Janssen, as recognized by the General Directorate of Public Health and has advanced the Ser string.
These data contrast the explanation given by Enrique Ruiz Escudero, when Catalonia recognized the expiration of 69,000 doses in its warehouses after the defrosting of a greater number of doses than it needed, and hinted that this problem did not occur in the Madrid region.
“For a few weeks we have been carrying the administration of those doses that were closer to expiration so that they are used before the others ”, explained the spokesperson.
On the contrary, sources from the Madrid Government hold the Ministry of Health responsible for changes in criteria when administering the Astrazeneca and Janssen vaccines, which have led to the expiration of a large part of the vaccines, which were supposed to be donated, according to the regional Council.
The expired vaccines correspond to 1.08% of all the doses that the Spanish Ministry of Health delivered to the Madrid capital, if only expired ones are taken into account. Instead, the Basque Country has only defeated 36 immunity units, which is 0.00098% of which they have been sent from the National Executive.
Besides, the Ser string, through its network of stations, has asked other regional communities, such as that of Melilla, where they confirm that some 2,000 vaccines have been expired, but not due to its expiration date.
As opposed, Africa is the continent that today suffers the most negative consequences of the pandemic due to the low supply of drugs against the virus. With a 6.9% of its population with at least one dose, and 4.54% with complete immunization, the African continent faces a deficit of almost 500 million vaccines, according to the WHO. In addition, it is expected that by the end of this year, a 17% of the African population will be vaccinated.
